Origami Conferences

Since 1989, there have been several highly successful international scientific conferences exploring the interactions between origami, mathematics, science, and (since 2001) education. The conferences take place at irregular intervals—basically, whenever a general chair and sponsoring organization decide that the time has come for the next. Beginning in 2015, the OSME series of conferences is guided by the OSME Steering Committee; more details are here.

  • First Internation Meeting of Origami Science and Technology,
    Ferrara, Italy, 1989
The first in the series, organized by Humiaki Huzita and held at the University of Padua. Its proceedings, Proceeding of the First International Meeting of Origami Science and Technology, is extremely rare and hard to obtain; a pity, because it contains some of the seminal papers of origami-math, notably the Huzita-Justin Axioms and Justin’s non-self-intersection conditions.
  • Second International Meeting of Origami Science and Scientific Origami,
    Otsu, Japan, 1994
This second meeting was organized by Koryo Miura and Yohei Izutsu and was held at Seian University of Art and Design. The proceedings, Origami Science & Art, is also out of print and, like the first proceedings, contains important works, including descriptions of several tessellation algorithms and some of the first papers on what is now known as tree theory.
  • The Third International Meeting of Origami Science, Mathematics, and Education (3OSME),
    Asilomar, California, USA, 2001
The third meeting in the series was sponsored by
OrigamiUSA and was organized by Professor Thomas Hull (now at Western New England College). Its proceedings,
Origami3, remains in print and continues the advancement of origami in mathematics and science, while adding education to the mix.
  • The Fourth International Conference on Origami in Science, Mathematics, and Education (4OSME),
    Pasadena, California, USA, 2006
The fourth meeting was also sponsored by
OrigamiUSA and was organized by me. Its proceedings,
    Origami4, also remains in print.

  • The Fifth International Conference on Origami in Science, Mathematics, and Education (5OSME),
    Singapore, 2010
The fifth meeting was organized by Patsy Wang-Iverson, Eileen Tan, and Benjamin Tan and held on the grounds of
Singapore Management University and added sessions on art and design to the mix. Its proceedings,
Origami5, was co-edited by Patsy Wang-Iverson, myself, and
Professor Mark Yim of the University of Pennsylvania.

  • The Sixth International Conference on Origami in Science, Mathematics, and Education (6OSME)
was held in 2014 at the University of Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan. Its proceedings,
    Origami6 Part 1 and
Origami6 Part 2 was published by the American Mathematical Society in January, 2016.

  • The Seventh International Conference on Origami in Science, Mathematics, and Education (7OSME)
was held in 2018 in Oxford, UK. Its proceedings are in four volumes, published by Tuttle:
